Extended schema.org news support

We’re happy to announce that schema.org has significantly expanded its support for marking up news articles, based on the rNews standard created by the International Press Telecommunications Council (IPTC).

New properties have been added to NewsArticle as well as other related types such as CreativeWork. For example, you can now specify a dateline for an article or provide information tying the online article to a printed version, such as the newspaper section and page where the article appeared. In addition, support for user comments is being added, applicable to news articles as well as a variety of other item types.

In collaboration with members of the IPTC including Evan Sandhaus (Lead Architect, Semantic Platforms at the New York Times), Stuart Myles (Deputy Director of Schema Standards at The Associated Press and Lead of the Semantic Web Working Group), and Andreas Gebhard (Managing Editor at Getty Images and Member of the IPTC Board of Directors), we’ve added news/publishing properties and aligned them with the IPTC rNews standard. Given IPTC’s reach developing technical standards on behalf of over 60 news agencies, this is an exciting partnership between search engines and content creators.

Making news metadata on the web machine readable in a standard way opens up new opportunities for innovation for both publishers and consumers of news. We look forward to seeing increased markup and interesting new applications of this data in the future.

  1. This is great news. Is there any kind of diff available for what exactly you changed at schema.org to accomodate rNews?

  2. That's good, but http://schema.org/docs/schemaorg.owl does not seem to be updated. Is this OWL file for public use? If the OWL file is official it would be nice if the schema.org documentation and this file was somewhat in sync.

  3. Hi Kavi - It's Irving - It's nice to see all the engines moving forward on a single standard. How would I best explain to a client the advantages of marking up their entire news site with these tags? I understand that Google will be able to read the data on the page quicker and more accurately but will the client see more traffic after going through this tremendous amount of labor to install these tags.

  4. Kavi - We are describing words in a dictionary (Mathematics Dictionary). Each math word is split into sections like the word/phrase, the definition, examples, some solved examples, related math words/concepts etc.

    are some examples.

What do you propose we use in schema.org?
    Something like Thing>Intangible>Reviews ?

  5. Great to see this but I'm using schema in my website and when testing with rich snippet testing tool the breadcrumb doesn't show up correctly.

With Microformats or data vocabulary it works but not with schema. Why ?

  12. Hoping this reaches you Kavi. I seem to have found a bug in Google's parsing of schema.org microdata, when testing using the rich snippets tool.

It does not work correctly on pages with table layouts.

For example, example 1 on this page: http://schema.org/Review

Works fine as it is. If the reviews are all enclosed by a single table, with a tr for each review, and some of the elements of each review put into cells td, then the rich snippets tool tries to put the properties of the review onto the parent item instead.

If either the td or table tags are removed, then it works again.

We have review data in tables and cannot get our microdata to parse until this is fixed :(

Would be great to get some feedback on this.

  19. I'm just surprised to see the section of NewsArticle but still there is no field to add article body under NewsArticle even it is available in Article section. If we've a publisher website to publish world news like appeared on News & Gossips so it is not a printed edition then how we add such markups here.
